A popular open-source desktop environment originally intended for UNIX workstations and now developed for the Linux operating system. KDE provides a graphical user interface (GUI) and basic applications that correspond to those found with Microsoft Windows or the Macintosh operating system. By providing a mainstream environment and familiar desktop appearance, KDE is intended to make Linux easier for users. KDE and GNOME are leading contenders for consideration as a Linux desktop standard.
