A technology for real-time I/O encryption and decryption of SQL Server and Azure SQL Database data and log file with a symmetric key without increasing the size of the encrypted database. The database encryption key (DEK) is stored in the database boot record for availability during recovery and is protected with a certificate. TDE is performed at the page level and does not provide encryption across communication channels.
